Spring Tree Care Calendar

Spring is a good time to prune out damaged parts of many of your trees and other plants, which may have occurred from the harsh winter. In spring, you can prepare your yard for summer landscaping by thinning or removing deadwood and/or removing the unwanted parts of your existing landscaping. This will help prevent damage to any new landscaping. Be sure to check the spring tree care calendar for optimal dates/timeframes.

Many insects and diseases are active during the spring months. Check your trees and shrubs regularly for any sign of pest activity and avoid pruning on oaks and elms during this time due to insect activity.

Summer Tree Care Calendar

Trees should be watered during dry, hot periods when there is insufficient creating dry ground conditions. Adequate rainfall is generally equivalent to 1 inch of rain per week, during the hottest part of the summer and for new trees, often more watering is needed. Properly watered trees are healthier and therefore are able to resist pests and diseases better.

Your tree’s leaves are a good indicator of the tree’s health. Monitor the leaves by watching for problems that may show up as leaves with holes, shriveling leaves, unusual dropping, turning brown, yellow, or exhibiting early fall color. Call your Certified Arborist if these signs appear to minimize the damage.

Pruning certain trees (except the Elms & Oaks) during the growing season can help prevent damage from storms. Pruning out the dead wood, any broken or hanging branches, and thinning the ends of the branches will help to minimize the damage that could occur.

Fall Tree Care Calendar

Although trees are great additions to your landscape, trees with problems can be liabilities during storms or extreme weather.  As seen in our tree care calendar, fall is a great time to prepare your trees and shrubs for winter. Pruning in fall can help protect trees from harsh winter storms so they bloom as vibrant as possible come spring. Once the leaves have fallen and a tree’s branch structure is more visible, pruning can be done more easily along with the benefit of the reduced spread of certain disease pathogens or insect infestations.

Most tree problems begin with poor soils. Whether from lack of nutrients or other necessary soil components, soil compaction, or amount of acidity, among other factors, improving your tree’s soils will help create conditions that are more like those of the forest floor, enabling tree roots to function at their best. When a landscape tree is growing in soil that is well-suited to its needs, it is fortified against pests, disease, and environmental stresses.

Winter Tree Care Calendar

When the leaves have dropped in the fall, it is easier for your arborist to see the structure of your trees. When summer annuals have faded from the landscape, there is less risk of disrupting your sensitive plants when working on large trees. As the soil freezes, the equipment can often gain closer access, which can enhance our safety and reduce your costs. In accordance with our tree care calendar, winter pruning can also avoid some serious tree health diseases that are active and spread easily during the growing seasons of spring and summer.
