It’s nine o’clock in the morning and Dan Barwinski, one of our Certified Arborists, arrives at the third stop of the day to treat the crabapple tree. Dan goes to the door and rings the bell. No one answers. Probably no one is home. Then he hears a distant voice, “I can’t get to the door right now.”
He first thinks she is probably busy or maybe she is in her housecoat and doesn’t want to come to the door. Dan calls back through the door, “Wachtel Tree Service. I’m here to spray the tree.”
Dan thinks he should just go spray the tree. There are a lot of customers to get to today. But something tells him to wait and he calls back through the door.
The woman says she can’t get to her walker. Finally, after calling back and forth through the door, Dan says, “If you need help say, ‘help’.” A definitive “Help!” is the response.
Dan locates a key through the woman’s direction and after asking permission, makes his way into the house. There, Dan finds the woman on the floor, with her walker out of her reach. She had fallen at 4:00 a.m. and had grown weary trying to get herself up from the floor.
Dan’s first-aid training came back to him as he dialed 911 for help. Dan contacted her family and waited for the paramedics. She lives alone and no one would have checked on her until after work that evening.
All of us at Wachtel would like to say “Thanks!” to Dan for doing more than his job that day. We’re proud Dan is a part of our team.
