What type of tree should I plant?

What are the important benefits of planting trees?
Trees provide habitat for wildlife, shade for those warm summer days, view screening if desired, improved air quality, as well as other health benefits. Studies have shown improved mental health by those who have trees in their lives.
How do you decide where to plant trees?
The mature size of a trees will influence planting locations. Buildings, sight lines, driveways, and other infrastructure all need to be factored in when choosing a planting location. Other factors such as utilities (both above and below ground) also play a role in tree placement.
Where do you water your tree, and how often?
Keeping a new plant well watered until established is critical to its success. If a tree’s roots dry out, it cannot survive. Thus watering the soil within a few feet around the base of your new tree will help keep the roots growing. With sufficient rain (approx. 1” of rainfall in a week), most plants will obtain sufficient moisture. Without this kind of rainfall or during hot, dry periods of summer, watering will be necessary to make up for the lack of rainfall.
Do I really need to mulch my new tree?
Using organic mulch like wood mulch is beneficial for several reasons. Some of the benefits of mulching include:
- Reduces moisture loss.
- Keeps mowers and weeds away from the tree trunk.
- Moderates soil temperatures.
- Provides nutrients as it decomposes.

What are “balled and burlapped” trees?
Balled and burlapped (or B&B) trees refers to the means used to keep the soil around the tree roots while in transit to a planting location. After a tree is dug, burlap is wrapped around the soil to keep it in place, often a wire cage may accompany the burlap to better hold the soil in place.
What are “bare-root” trees?
Bare root trees are trees that do not have any soil held around the tree roots while it is being moved to the planting location. These root systems must stay moistened for the tree to survive while in transit. Often bare root trees are small trees that are planted in bulk.
What are “container” trees?
Container trees refers to the means used to keep the soil around the tree roots. Containers, generally made of plastic, are used to keep the soil around the tree roots prior to planting. Some trees are grown for a short time in containers prior to being installed in a yard.
