Wachtel Tree Science exhausts all potential options before resorting to the removal of a tree. However, sometimes the only option for a tree that has died is to remove it. The next question to consider is when a tree should be removed. While a tree or stump can be removed any time during the year, the best time for removal is during winter. Here’s why winter is the best time:

Reason 1: Trees that have decaying or dead branches become more of a risk during winter. Wisconsin winter storms can produce as much as a foot of snow. When snow accumulates on trees, they become more and more weighed down. Tree structures that are weakened from decay or death have a high chance of breaking off due to the additional weight. Depending on your property, branches or trees can come down on top of valuables, such as vehicles, garages or even homes. Removing trees that are no longer living protects other important aspects of your property.

Reason 2: Trees or stumps that are dead no longer grow. This can cause issues for surrounding plants as nutrients aren’t being distributed properly throughout the warmer months. Removing dormant trees and stumps during winter not only ensures proper nutrition for surrounding plants but also means they endure less damage. The removal process is significantly more effective when done while the ground is frozen. Winter removal not only protects surrounding plants but also the soil and grass.

Reason 3: Sometimes, new trees or shrubs can start to grow naturally around dead trees and stumps. The sooner a tree or stump is removed, the sooner next steps can be taken to prepare the area for additional planting. Removing tree roots from the soil, shaping the construction of the area and even aerating/planting seeds can prepare the area for spring growth. If planting isn’t what you’d like to use the space for, maybe consider picking up some lawn decorations! Prices are usually down due to it being the off season.
