What Makes Wachtel Tree Science Different

Earlier this year, all employees of Wachtel Tree Science took an anonymous survey as a way to self-audit and see if we can find ways to improve ourselves as a company. After the results were compiled, all the employees were able to look at every answer that was given. There was one result that stood out most to me. The question was fairly simple, “Give three words that you would use to describe Wachtel”. There were several recurring answers, such as “innovative”, “safety”, and “efficient”. However, there was one answer that was by far the most common: Family.

There are several ways that I see Wachtel as a family. We look out for the safety of each other at work, we often stand up in each other’s weddings, get together at social events, grow our skills and abilities together, light-heartedly give each other a hard time, and much more. Even though Wachtel has grown to be a tree care company that covers a 12-county area in southeastern Wisconsin, we still see each other every morning at our single location in downtown Merton.

I believe that this family environment makes us better arborists. When we care about each other as a family, it also promotes a culture of doing things the right way. We, of course, want each other to be efficient, but we also want to make sure we are working safely and not cutting corners. In our Wachtel family, after safety, quality is the most important core value. It is similar to having a big brother or sister who holds you accountable for your work, and pushes you to be better every day. Then before you know it, eventually you become the “big brother or sister” passing on the skills and culture to new members of the family.

Our clients are also an extended part of our Wachtel family. While we may only see some of you a few times a year, we take great pride in the fact that you have given us the opportunity to care for your trees. We value our great clients at Wachtel, and we do the best we can to reciprocate that loyalty by providing over 400 years of combined experience in arboriculture. Wachtel has more than 25 ISA Certified Arborists on staff, including four Board Certified Master Arborists. With our great team working together, there isn’t an obstacle that we can’t find a solution for. Another great part of our family is our excellent and responsive office staff to ensure that you talk to a friendly voice rather than a recording when you call us.

At Wachtel, we are more than just a company providing tree care services. I believe I speak for all my coworkers when I say that we enjoy coming to work every day. I enjoy seeing all my peers and hearing about what’s going on in their lives. I look forward to the stories I often get to hear from our clients about the history of their properties and what they do for a living. I also enjoy watching our new employees grow into great arborists as they progress through our advanced on-going training program with the support of their “brothers” and “sisters”. We push each other to be the best we can be every day. All of these things are part of what makes Wachtel a family, and that’s what makes us different.

Our Culture of Safety and Training

I started working at Wachtel Tree Science in the mid-1990s. Our location was small with barely enough space. Our equipment was functional but in need of upgrading. Our culture was focused on the day at hand and getting the job done.

Knowing that women are in arboriculture is an important step for industries beyond arboriculture.

The Science in Wachtel Tree Science

The term “science” has always been in our name, and you may have wondered why. Science is a process of inquiry that allows us to test our ideas of how things might actually work.
