Why would anyone think of requesting a tree inventory? It seems like a lot of effort and energy involved just to collect some information for trees on a property. I recognize that train of thought, though considers these points prior to dismissing an inventory.

I started working at Wachtel Tree Science in the mid-1990s. Our location was small with barely enough space. Our equipment was functional but in need of upgrading. Our culture was focused on the day at hand and getting the job done.

Pruning trees within the first few years of planting them is a critical first step. Early pruning removes problematic branches and corrects branches when they are small (less than 1’’ in diameter). This reduces the size of the pruning wounds, which promotes the tree’s ability to seal over.
