Soil health is the key to plant health. The physical and chemical properties of your soil determine what can grow and how well it thrives. A site and soil assessment helps us evaluate your current conditions and create a long-term plan.

1.  Build Deep, Healthy Soil

Most developers leave only 1 to 4 inches of topsoil over construction fill, and trees need more than that to thrive. We build better soil over time by adding compost, mulch, shrubs and perennials. Increasing beneficial microbial activity is also helpful, though it should always be based on site conditions.

2.  Keep the Soil Covered

Bare soil dries out, heats up, erodes, and stresses roots. Turfgrass competes with trees and does not support their health. Use mulch or groundcover plants to cover tree root zones.

3.  Protect the Root Zone

Minimize disruption around trees whenever possible. This includes reducing herbicide use, as it can interfere with beneficial soil bacteria and fungi. If you have a tree surrounded by a lawn, create a wide mulch ring and consider compatible companion plants to reduce stress and improve soil life.

4.  Support Living, Healthy Roots

Proper watering is essential in the early years as roots are established. Mulch helps regulate soil temperature, reduce moisture loss, and encourage strong root growth. Planting a diverse mix of species also helps create healthier, more resilient root systems that support each other over time.
